You fall asleep fine, then you're wide awake at 3 AM with your mind racing. It is frustrating, but there are clear reasons why it happens, and simple changes that help.
Why do I keep waking up at 3 AM?
- Lighter sleep: deep sleep happens mostly early in the night. By 3 AM, sleep is lighter and easier to break.
- Stress: cortisol starts rising in the early morning hours; when you are stressed, that rise can wake you.
- Alcohol: it makes you drowsy at first, then fragments sleep later in the night.
- Late, heavy or spicy dinners: digestion and acidity can disturb sleep.
- Room and light: heat, noise and screen light in the evening all affect sleep [1].
- Health reasons: needing to urinate, snoring with breathing pauses (sleep apnoea), pain or low mood.
What does Ayurveda say about waking at 3 AM?
Ayurveda divides the day and night into dosha periods. The hours from roughly 2 to 6 AM belong to Vata, the energy of movement and air. When Vata is disturbed by stress, irregular meals, travel or late screens, the mind becomes restless and sleep turns light. The remedy is grounding: regular routine, warm food, oil massage and calming herbs.
What evening routine helps me sleep through the night?
| Time | What to do |
|---|---|
| After 2 PM | No tea or coffee |
| 7 to 8 PM | Light, warm dinner, at least 2 to 3 hours before bed |
| After dinner | A 10-minute walk |
| 1 hour before bed | Dim lights; phones and laptops away |
| 30 minutes before bed | Warm shower, or massage your feet with a little warm oil |
| Bedtime | Cool, dark, quiet room; same time every night |
What should I do when I wake up at 3 AM?
- Don't check the time or your phone.
- Breathe slowly: in for 4, hold for 7, out for 8. Repeat 4 times.
- If you are still awake after about 20 minutes, get up, sit in dim light and read something calm until you feel sleepy.
- Keep your wake-up time the same the next morning, even after a bad night.
Which herbs support restful sleep?
Ayurveda's main sleep herbs are Ashwagandha, Tagar, Brahmi and Shankhpushpi. Randomised trials and a meta-analysis found that ashwagandha extract improved sleep quality compared with placebo [2, 3], and valerian, a close relative of Tagar, has been reviewed for sleep with mixed but encouraging results [4].
Calmer Nights combines Ashwagandha (200 mg) and Tagar (200 mg) with Brahmi, Shankhpushpi and Sarpagandha in every tablet. Take 1 tablet after each of two meals. It contains no melatonin and is non-habit-forming. Many customers say their sleep feels more restful within 1 to 2 weeks.
